We're all intrigued by the giant, I mean eight to 10 foot diameter pipe snaking out of the hills. It was painted shiny black and safely fenced in by chain link. It seems to end up its some sort of generating station. It traveled down right beside the river so I felt it must be carrying water. In fact it did and it was heading right into the Newfoundland oldest continuing operating hydro generating station. We follow that part way along but as it was getting late we decided to turn back heading back into Petty Harbour . From this direction gives a view of the most picturesque wharf and some of the traditionally painted wooden fishing vessels all lined up along the wharf. This is a view that is most often shown on the Mary Walsh series ‘Hatching Matching and Dispatching'.
"A Boat Like Gideon Brown"
Oh Gideon lived across the bay
He's gettin ' older now
His boat is big and st ron g and bold
She has a stalwart bow
But my father's boat was second hand
One someone used before
And after every fishing trip
My father always swore
That someday he would save enough
To go to St. John 's town
And buy himself a big new boat
A boat like Gideon Brown
A boat like Gideon Brown
Confederation came around
And the days of old age pension
He said 'Son I'm saving every cent'
And this you must not mention
You save the baby bonus too
And things just might turn around
And we'll have enough to buy a boat
A boat like Gideon Brown
[Chorus:]
'Cause she can punch ahead in any gale
And ride the fishing ground
I often thought how proud I'd be
In a boat like Gideon Brown
In a boat like Gideon Brown
Many years did pass away
And Dad began to fade
He didn't talk of boats too much
He said 'Son I'm afraid'
If things don't soon improve
Then I'll be underground
Before we ever get to see ourselves
In a boat like Gideon Brown
[Chorus]
I sat and held his hand one day
And he said 'Son, that policy'
The insurance is all in your name
You're the beneficiary
And when I'm gone they'll pay you off
Then go to St. John 's town
And buy yourself a big new boat
A boat like Gideon Brown
The sun had decided to keep the clouds away and skies were almost clear so it seemed like a perfect chance to head back up to signal Hill and see if there was a view well bingo. It was wonderful grand. The sun was shining on the Southside Hills and most of the town was in the shadow of the headlands. Cabot Tower stood out in all its majesty and tourists were perched on the upper observation decks. There were a few black clouds looming in the west that looked like they were ready to drop a wild water on the city. We had to move fast but I could see some great photo opportunities on the horizon. The feeling on top of signal Hill is one of euphoria for me. I could sit here for hours watching the sea, watching the clouds. It feels like being on the edge of the world and that everything is within your grasp. The fresh air very clear here and the wind makes you know you are alive. It has a beauty that makes you fell as if you are standing next to God. It is something that you have to experience for yourself, and ‘see the world from way up here'.
Signal Hill Dav
It feels a little strange, asking how you've been
I haven't written in a while, but misery's a funny thing
I used to lay awake and pray you were the one
But up on signal hill,
I'm seeking shelter from the sun
I can see the world from way up here
Where the air is thin there is no fear
Once there stood an army here
but the army it stood still
Waiting for a sign up on signal hill
How you feel I can not tell
I see only myself in this well
Deadman's pond is bottomless they say
No one knows how many love lost souls in there lay
I can see the world from way up here
Where the air is thin there is no fear
Once there stood an army here
but the army it stood still
Waiting for a sign up on signal hill
I lay by this pond holding hearts
I could have seen this from the start
Even though it seems you've won
I know I‘ll find another one
I can see the world from way up here
Where the air is thin there is no fear
Once there stood an army here
but the army it stood still
Waiting for a sign up on signal hill
Whose eyes will you be looking through when this letter gets to you
We took an early dinner at Velma's. Cod for Sandy and I and, you guessed it, shrimp for mom. She loved it. Well done Velma's. Sandy took us back to where we left our car. We headed back to Conception Bay South but had to look into something for mom's distress at shoppers drug Mart.
We both crashed early. The girls were going to Erin 's but I didn't think I'd make it back.
